The Syrian Hamster
The Syrian Hamster is the most common type of hamster kept as a pet. It is approximately 4-5 inches in length
The Syrian Hamster is a solitary animal and will not live with another past
8-10 weeks of age and so it is important that they have their own cages as
serious fighting, even death can occur. The Syrian Hamster is nocturnal,
usually waking during the evening.
Hamsters need a mixed pellet diet, which is available in both savoury and
fruit varieties; they also love millet, dog biscuits and weetabix. These
also make fantastic boredom breakers as your hamster spends most of its time
in a cage and will need things to keep it busy.
The average lifespan is 2-2½ years
Guinea Pig
On average it is about 10 inches long and weighs about 2 pounds. Its hair
length and colour vary a great deal. They are herbivores and eat grasses,
fruit, grains and vegetables. Guinea pigs are not able to produce their own
vitamin C; the daily requirement of vitamin C for a guinea pig is 50 mg.
In order to prevent vitamin C deficiency and subsequent scurvy, we recommend
feeding your guinea pig, Guinea pig excel, a pellet diet containing stabilized
vitamin C.
Guinea pigs are born after a gestation period of from 65 to 70 days. The
young can forage for themselves after only 3 days, but their mother cares
for them for about four weeks. A Guinea Pig's life span is from 5 to 7 years.
Rabbit
An adult rabbit can weigh from 1kg to 10kg, the weight varying according
to the breed and sex. They can live for between 5 and 8 years but some may
live longer.
Give your rabbit hay or grass daily, as well as a complete diet we recommend
Supa rabbit excel as rabbits are prone to selective feeding where most rabbit
feeds contain a mixed diet, excel does contains one variety of a high fibre
pellet which prevents this from occurring. Feed a selection of green vegetables
each week.
